A Special Collection of Fetishes, Part 2

This wonderful group of fetishes comes from two different sources. Some are out of the private collection of Roger Crabtree, an Oklahoma rancher who has been collecting the finest in Zuni fetish carving for the last forty years. Other pieces are from a private California collection, now on the market for the first time. All are of the highest quality, and include rare historic pieces, as well as pieces by some of the greats of Zuni fetish carving.

Stone bear with a turquoise bead on its bundle, 2nd quarter 20th Century. Very nice banded stone. 1 5/8" long. $495 (FT KF IM/28) Inquire/Order Here's a fun one--a carved antler figure by Teddy Weahkee, c. 1950. It should be a snake, except that it has feet. Still, a wonderful and fun piece with an infectious smile. 4 1/2" long. SOLD (FT KF IM/38) Inquire/Order The first Teddy Weahkee fetish pot, this one encrusted in turquoise. Made circa 1945-55, with two small holes that were almost certainly intentionally made. Decorated with 4 antler figures, the longest of which measures 7 3/4" long; the pot itself is 7 1/4" high and 9" in diameter. Weahkee made these pots to satisfy a demand for "ceremonial" objects, though these pots are not ceremonial and were never used as such. $5900 (FT KF IM/129)Inquire/Order

The other Teddy Weahkee fetish pot, this one slightly older and larger and not covered in turquoise, c. 1935-45. This pot, with a drilled hole, has been "aged" by rubbing, as Zuni potters sometimes did in the 1930s to produce "older" pots for collectors and museums. This one has two attached antler fetishes, one of which is the longest one we have ever seen--17 1/2" long. The pot itself is 11" diameter and 8 1/4" high. A truly amazing piece. $8900 (FT KF IM/133) Inquire/Order One last piece by Teddy Weahkee, this one a very large Zuni stone bear with an outrageous bundle, c. 1940s. 4 1/4" long without the bundle, and the carved antler piece in the bundle adds another 1" in front of the nose. $2900 (FT KF IM/272) Inquire/Order Stone wolf, 2nd quarter 20th Century.
